Softball to Host “Strike Out Cancer Night” on Tuesday

Widener for the fifth straight year will host “Strike Out Cancer Night” with this year's proceeds benefitting The Wister Institute Melanoma Research Center.

The event will take place as part of the softball team's doubleheader Tuesday against Cabrini at 5:00 pm.  Donations will be collected that night with all proceeds going to the foundation.

Every year, melanoma takes 8,000 people from their loved ones across the country.  Despite a high cure rate for those who are diagnosed early, there are no effective treatments for melanoma once it has invaded the body.

The Wistar Institute is the nation's first independent biomedical research institute and one of only six National Cancer Institute (NCI) centers focusing entirely on basic research in cancer and immunology.  The institute strives to understand the unique biology of melanoma in order to develop new therapies against the disease.  It serves as a way for researchers to partner with clinicians – a framework of connections that brings scientists, physicians, the life sciences industry and melanoma advocates together to save lives through new and better therapies.

Widener will be wearing special grey shirts during the games.
