Men's Lacrosse Posts 15-0 Triumph at Alvernia

Widener left no doubt with a six-goal first quarter and cruised to the third shutout in school history with a 15-0 Commonwealth Conference blanking of Alvernia in Reading, PA.
 
Johnny Casey (Abington, PA) and fellow senior Michael Bassani (Califon, NJ) each scored twice in the opening quarter, when the Pride had a commanding 13-0 shots edge, a 15-4 advantage in ground balls and won 6-of-7 face-offs.  Sophomore Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) and junior Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) each had a goal and an assist in the period.
 
Fox and junior Brian Einstein (Mount Laurel, NJ) also scored twice in the contest and sophomore Dan Kaplan (Lynbrook, NY) dished two assists.  Sophomore Timothy Winslow (Newbury, MA) won 11-of-13 face-offs and closed with seven ground balls for Widener, which closed with a 42-18 shots advantage, 43-17 in ground balls and took 17-of-19 face-offs.
 
Sophomore Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) did not have to make a save over 30 minutes and senior Tommy Hoopes (West Chester, PA) had four over 15 1/2 minutes for the Pride (3-7. 1-1 CC).
 
Kevin Shupp totaled 16 saves for the Crusaders (5-6, 0-1).
 
Widener also recorded an 11-0 victory over Ursinus on March 23, 1981 and a 17-0 win at Alvernia on March 28, 2009.
 
Widener is home Saturday against Lycoming, starting at 1:00 pm.
