Men's Lacrosse Plays Valiantly In 11-3 Loss at No. 4 Stevenson

(box score)

Widener gave its all against another ranked opponent, but was handed an 11-3 setback by fourth-ranked Stevenson in Owings Mills, MD.

Widener for the second time this year played a ranked team as it opened its season February 25 with a great effort in a 9-5 loss to No. 5 SUNY Cortland.  Tonight also provided hope for the Pride, who scored first as senior Michael Bassani (Califon, NJ) tallied with three seconds to go in the opening quarter.

Stevenson grabbed the lead in the second quarter, but only held a 3-1 margin at halftime.  Ryan Rubenstein scored 45 seconds into the period for a 1-1 tie, Pat Candon tallied with 8:14 left for the lead and Billy Burgoyne scored with 4:27 to play.

But the Mustangs took over in the third quarter with six goals for a 9-1 lead.  Burgoyne, Stephen Banick and Michael Crowe all had a goal and an assist in the period.

Bassani added a second goal and junior Charlie Bytheway (Glen Mills, PA) also scored for the Pride (0-4).  Bytheway had seven ground balls and junior Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) made 17 saves.

Burgone and Candon each scored twice, Banick recorded three assists and Ian Bolland made 10 saves for the Mustangs (4-0).

Widener on Saturday visits Frostburg State for an 11:00 am contest in Frostburg, MD.
