Baseball Makes it Three Straight Wins, 9-6 Over 12th-Ranked Heidelberg

(box score)

Widener won its third straight game and moved over .500 for the first time this season with a 9-6 triumph over No. 12 Heidelberg in Fort Myers, FL.

Widener (4-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore Nick Cook (Cranford, NJ).  The margin ballooned to 5-0 in the third on a quartet of bases-loaded walks, issued to Sean Saverio (Horsham, PA), fellow senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA), Cook and junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA).

The Pride opened a 7-1 cushion in the fourth when Hollingsworth, who has been on a tear in the early part of the campaign, ripped a two-run single.  Cook and junior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) had RBI later in the contest.

Heidelberg (1-2) scored five times in the eighth to close to 9-6.  Ricardo Lizcano had an RBI triple and Eric Monroe added a run-scoring single.

Cook and senior Eric Von Stetina (Collegeville, PA) had two hits apiece and Cook ended with three RBI for the Pride.  Royersford, PA senior Jason Ferrie (1-0) struck out five, allowing one run and seven hits over seven innings, before senior Rick Kazigian (West Chester, PA) fired a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Jordan Martin had three hits and Lizcano added two RBI for Heidelberg.  Karl Boedecker (0-1) yielded five runs, three hits and four walks over two innings.

This marks the third straight year and fourth season in the last five Widener has defeated a ranked opponent in Florida.  It swept a doubleheader from No. 23 St. John Fisher in 2011, took a twin-bill from No. 13 Farmingdale State in 2010 and upended No. 18 Augustana (IL) in 2008.

Widener returns to action Wednesday against Saint Joseph's (Long Island), beginning at 7:00 pm.
