Men's Lacrosse Plays Tough in 9-6 Loss to 20th-Ranked Gettysburg

(box score)

Widener again played solidly against a ranked team and held a first-quarter lead, but in the end was dealt a 9-6 loss by No. 20 Gettysburg at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Pride held a 2-0 cushion after the first quarter on goals from seniors Johnny Casey (Abington, PA) and Michael Bassani (Califon, NJ).  The Bullets scored all four goals in the second quarter, including two from Austin Dodson, for a 4-2 margin.

Widener (2-6) hung around thanks to two goals from senior Ryan Shewell (Ellicott City, MD) to close to a 4-4 tie with 10:58 left in the third quarter.

But Gettysburg (5-3) rattled off the next five markers for a 9-4 lead.  Bobby DeWees netted the go-ahead tally with 10:03 to go in the third and Robby Maddux ended the burst on a goal with 10:41 remaining.

Maddux had two goals and an assist, Dodson scored twice with Martin Manilla and Bijan Firouzan each getting a goal and an assist for the Bullets.  Jon Maddalone came up with nine saves.

In addition to Shewell's goals, Casey and senior Mark Kane (Morton, PA) had a goal and an assist for the Pride.  Junior Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) also scored and sophomore Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made four saves over 30 minutes.

Tonight marked the fourth time this season Widener faced a ranked opponent.  The squad played strong in each contest before falling to No. 5 SUNY Cortland on February 25, No. 4 Stevenson on March 7 and No. 10 Dickinson on March 17.

Widener next Saturday hosts Albright, beginning at 3:30 pm.
