Men’s Lacrosse Loses 9-5 Game To No. 5 SUNY Cortland

(boxscore)
Widener battled back in the second half, but could not gain the lead in its season opener against fifth-ranked SUNY Cortland and ended with a 9-5 loss at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Widener played tight defense and only allowed one goal against in the first period, but SUNY Cortland (1-0) quickly jumped ahead in the second with five goals. In the second half, the Pride came back to the field with a vengeance by cutting the lead in half to make it 6-3 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Junior Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) got the scoring started with a goal off of a feed from sophomore Robert Clemens (Aston, PA). Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) and Clemens followed suit, each scoring unassisted goals about two minutes apart.

With Cortland about to go into the fourth quarter with a three goal lead, Michael Bassani (Califon, NJ) blasted one past keeper Mike Kaminski with just eight seconds remaining to close the gap to 6-4.

Less than a minute into the last quarter, Brendan Ballew scored an unassisted goal for Cortland, followed by two from Mike Tota. With the score sitting 9-4, Widener was still pushing hard to close the gap. At the 1:15 minute-mark, Ryan Shewell (Ellicott City, MD) put an unassisted goal into the back of the net. The Pride (0-1) pushed their offense to the last second, but it was not enough.

Timothy Winslow (Newbury, MA) ended 7-for-13 in face-offs and recovered two ground balls for the Red Dragons.

Charlie Bytheway (Glen Mills, PA) picked up six groundballs and caused four turnovers, leading the Pride in both areas. Pride goalkeeper Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) made 11 saves.

Widener will travel to Collegeville, PA on Wednesday to face Ursinus at 4:00 pm.
