Track & Field Competes Twice Over the Weekend

Widener hosted its field meet, finishing with a number of top performers, and also competed at the McElligott Invitational in Haverford, PA.

For the women, Victoria Batter (Woodlyn, PA) took fourth place in the long jump with 4.50 meters and the triple jump with 9.35 meters.  Colleen Spiller (Flemington, NJ) and Audrey Calkin (Honesdale, PA) tied each other for second place in the high jump with jumps of 1.52 meters. Spiller also finished with a 4.16 meter long jump. Calking had a 4.18 meter long jump and a 9.33 meter triple jump.  Sophomore Erica Szpynda (Berwick, PA) was tied for first among collegiates in the women's shot put, covering 12.14 meters.

Freshmen Kayla Thomas (Morton, PA) and Amanda-Renee Daniels (Lumberton, NJ) both finished first and third in two of their events. Thomas finished first in pole vault with 3.35 meters and third in the triple jump with 10.27 meters. Daniels took first in the shot put with a throw of 11.42 meters and third in the weight throw with a throw of 13.99 meters.

The men had their share of top performers. Nick Rodriguez (Haddonfield, NJ) finished second in the long jump with a measure of 6.515 meters.  Freshman Mike Recla (Bloomsburg, PA) heaved the shot put 15.18 meters for first place. Eric Solomon (Columbia, PA) threw 16.14 meters, Tyler Williams (Hanover, PA) 14.91 meters and senior Ed Maloney (Lincoln University, PA) 14.78 meters for second, fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the weight throw.

Dennis Nguyen (Springfield, PA), Kal McCloskey (Pittsburgh, PA) and Joshua Jackson (Mount Holly, NJ) competed in the heptathlon. Jackson finished third in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:17.20, fifth in the shot put with a throw of 9.87 meters, and finished the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.80 seconds for a combined score of 2050. McCloskey tied Jackson for fourth in the pole vault with 2.59 meters. McCloskey took first in the heptathlon shot put with a throw of 11.72 meters and second in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:11.90. He also finished in 11.56 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, 1.56 meters in the high jump, and 5.25 meters in the long jump for a fifth place heptathlon score of 3081. Nguyen finished third in the heptathlon with a score of 3706 by finishing first in the 55-meter dash in 7.03 seconds, the pole vault with 4.35 meters, and the long jump with 6.13 meters. He also finished the 1,000 meter run in 3:20.50, threw for 8.56 meters in the shot put, ran the 55-meter hurdles in 10.39 seconds, and finished the high jump with a jump of 1.59 meters.

At Haverford, senior Emmanuel Rupert (Baltimore, MD) was fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.29 seconds and freshman Jordan Stephney (Glenolden, PA) ended fourth in the 400-meter dash in 53.53 seconds.  Sophomore John Ruggiero (Warrington, PA) closed fifth in the 400-meter dash in 53.94 seconds and junior Ryan Gallagher (Langhorne, PA) was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:55.14.
 
The men's distance medley relay closed fourth in 10:10.93.  The squad consisted of senior All-American Michael Garrity (Glenolden, PA), Chris Garrity (Glenolden, PA), fellow freshman Michael Ciavarelli (Secane, PA) and sophomore Michael Quinn (Conshohocken, PA).
 
For the women, freshman Brittany Diehl (Havertown, PA) was third in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.46 and junior Darcela Llanos (Abington, PA) closed fourth in 1:01.89.
