Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) and fellow sophomore Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) each scored in the fourth quarter and Widener held on for a 6-5 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over Elizabethtown at Hersheypark Stadium.
The Pride looked in fairly good shape in the second quarter when Fox, freshman Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) and sophomore Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) scored within a four-minute span for a 4-2 lead with 5:27 left.
The Blue Jays got a goal from Greg Kenneally with 1:12 remaining in the second and a marker from Shawn Corcoran 4 1/2 minutes into the third quarter for a 4-4 tie.
Casey gave Widener the lead for good with 6:29 to play and Fox's tally just over a minute later made it 6-4. Elizabethtown was not done as Brian Schaaf found the back of the net with 4:39 remaining for a 6-5 contest.
Corcoran was sure he scored the tying marker with eight seconds left, but Elizabethtown was called for too many men on the field and that negated the goal. The wild run would have offset a great quarter for the Pride, who outshot the Blue Jays 12-2 in the period.
Fox continued his strong play with two goals and an assist, giving him at least two goals in six straight games and at least three points in five consecutive contests. Junior Michael Bassani (Califon, NJ) also scored and freshman Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) made five saves over 30 minutes for the Pride.
Derek Kline scored twice with Corcoran and Schaaf getting two assists apiece for Elizabethtown (5-4, 3-3 MAC).
Widener (7-2, 5-0) is tied for first place in the MAC with Messiah (5-0) and both are one-half game ahead of Eastern (5-1).
Widener on Wednesday hosts Eastern for a big league match-up, beginning at 7:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
