Softball Splits a Pair With Lebanon Valley

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Sophomore Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and senior #Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) notched her seventh straight win for Widener in a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference win over Lebanon Valley that preceded an 8-0 loss.

Widener had just one hit entering the ninth, but breached starter Laura Snyder for two more. Sophomore Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) lined a one-out double and Nance followed with a double of her own to run Widener's winning streak to seven.

Shultz (7-2) won a classic pitchers' duel in which she carried a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings. She allowed a mere one hit and two walks over nine innings with six strikeouts, giving her 56 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings this season.

Snyder (2-3) could not be blamed for the loss, carrying a perfect game through 4 2/3 innings and a no-hitter through 6 1/3 frames. She struck out 13, yielding one run and three hits over 8 1/3 innings.

Game two was a different story as the Dutchmen cracked nine hits that included three as well as three RBI from Steffani Secola. Marisa Krause laced a solo homer in the fourth to give Lebanon Valley a 3-0 lead.

Secola lined a two-run single in the sixth to make it 7-0 and Steph Hulme lifted a sacrifice later in the frame for the run-rule win.

Val Malizzia (3-1) struck out five, allowing no runs and two hits over six innings for the Dutchmen (7-4, 1-1 CC).

Philadelphia, PA sophomore Liz Carpino (2-4) gave up four runs – two earned – and four hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Pride (9-7, 1-1). Senior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) had a single in game two, but was held off the board in the opener and had her eight-game hitting streak snapped.

Widener on Thursday hosts Swarthmore as part of the “320 Challenge,” beginning at 4:00 pm.
