Senior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) rapped seven hits in the doubleheader for Widener, which made history with victories of 8-0 and 13-7 at Cabrini in Radnor, PA.
Phillips led off game one with a home run and senior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) laced an RBI single later in the inning for a 2-0 Widener lead. Sophomore Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) and Phillips added RBI doubles sandwiched around a run-scoring fielder's choice from sophomore Kristina Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, PA) in the fourth for a 5-0 margin.
The Pride (8-6) added three runs in the sixth for its third run-rule win of the season. Sophomore Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) belted a lead-off homer and Shultz added a two-run single for the final.
Shultz (6-2) notched her career-best sixth straight victory, allowing no runs and four hits over six innings with nine strikeouts for her second shutout of the season and fifth career. Phillips had three of the team's 12 hits.
Marcelle Christ (1-3) allowed seven runs -- six earned -- and 10 hits over five innings for the Cavaliers (1-7). Lindsey Atzert had two hits.
Phillips continued her tear in the nightcap, going 4-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to a career-best eight games. She is batting .640 (16-for-25) during that stretch.
Widener ran away and hid with six runs in the fifth for an 8-2 lead. Shultz, Ostaszewski, senior Kelly Vogelgesang (Downingtown, PA) and sophomore Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) all had RBI singles in the frame and Hargadon added a run-scoring groundout.
Philadelphia, PA sophomore Liz Carpino (2-3) permitted seven runs -- six earned -- and nine hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Shultz ended the contest with three hits of the squad's 16 hits and three RBI.
Hargadon had a hit in each contest and is riding a career-best six-game hitting streak. Freshman Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning of game two for her first career long ball.
Missy Miller (0-4) was tagged for 13 runs -- nine earned -- and 16 hits over seven innings. Angela Shookster hit a pair of two-run homers in the contest.
The victories were the 500th and 501st in the 39-year history of Widener softball (501-451-1). Fred Dohrmann, in his 30th year as coach, has led the Pride to 471 of those wins (471-403).
Widener on Saturday opens Commonwealth Conference play at home against Lebanon Valley, beginning at 1:00 pm.
