Widener played solid defense early, but ultimately could not hold off second-ranked SUNY Cortland for a 13-0 loss at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium in both teams season opener.

The Red Dragons were limited to only two goals in the first quarter, but scored four times each in the second and third stanzas. Jay DiStefano netted a pair in the second quarter with Greg Wright and Mike Tota also scoring for a 6-0 halftime margin.

SUNY Cortland (1-0) scored all of its third-quarter goals within a three-minute span for a 10-0 cushion. Tota, Eric Parah, Pat Hayes and Mark Panneton all found the back of the net.

Senior Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) had three ground balls and sophomore Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) made seven saves in just 30 minutes for the Pride (0-1), who received votes in the USILA Preseason Coaches Poll.

Tota, DiStefano and Wright all scored twice with Mike Kaminski totaling seven saves for the Red Dragons.

Widener next Saturday visits Swarthmore as part of the “320 Challenge.” Faceoff is at 2:00 pm.
