Men’s Basketball Wins 78-74 Over SUNY Cortland in Widener’s Tip-Off Classic Final

The championship game between Widener and SUNY Cortland could have been anybody's game as the lead went back and forth six times, but Widener pushed through to the end to take home a 78-74 victory that went down to the final seconds and champions at Schwartz Center.
 
The end of the first half left Widener behind 42-38, but the Pride (3-0) found their spark and got the crowd yelling and outshot the Red Dragons (2-1) 40-32 after the break. The game was tied with five minutes left in the game 66-66. Widener's Brian Smith (Baltimore, MD) made a free throw to bring the Pride out in front, but Brian Manning from SUNY Cortland sank two free throws and turned the score around. Lamar Jackson (Philadelphia, PA) made three lay-ups in a row, including one off of a steal, to help the Pride pull ahead 73-68. Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) sank a free throw with just seconds left in the second half to make the final score 78-74.
 
Jackson led the pack in scoring with his 16 total points.  He also can be accounted for four assists and two steals. Perry Wright (Severn, MD) was a force on both offense and defense, putting up 13 points for the Pride, as well as six assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Brennan came up with a total of eight rebounds.
 
For SUNY Cortland, Jeremy Smith and Jesse Winter both came away with 21 total points. Winter was three-for-six in three point field goals and was ten-for-11 in free throws. Harrison Hefele left with five assists. Kevin McMahon, Winter, and Hefele each had two steals.
 
Widener entered the Championship game after defeating Penn State Mont Alto 115-47 yesterday, and SUNY Cortland won a 71-58 game against Delaware Valley to be put in the Championship to face the Pride.

The Consolation game between the Delaware Valley Aggies and the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions was neck and neck right up until about three minutes left in the game, when Delaware Valley pulled away and took home an 86-73 win.
 
For the Aggies (1-2), junior Jeremy Beckett led the squad with 28 total points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Sophomore Nathan Bollinger was second on the team with 25 total points. Bollinger was nine-for-16 in field goal attempts, including four-for-six in three point field goals, and three-for-four at the line. Jay Donovan shot 100% in free throws, making four.
 
For Penn State Mont Alto (2-2) senior Dan Smay led the Lions with 24 total points. He was five-for-seven in three point field goal attempts and five-for-five at the line. Tyree Maeser had six assists and five rebounds.
