Senior Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) keyed the decisive run as part of his career-high 22 points and junior BJ Smith (Baltimore, MD) was a terror with a personal-best 18 rebounds for Widener in an 88-67 win over Central Penn in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in York, PA.
McDevitt scored 13 points that included three 3-pointers during an 18-5 run over five minutes that gave the Pride an 86-65 lead with 1:49 left. This occurred during a second half in which Widener shot 45 percent (18-of-40) from the floor and limited Central Penn to just 38 percent (15-of-40).
McDevitt bested his previous high of 21 points set November 28, 2009 against Neumann. He also canned five 3-pointers for the third time this season and fourth in his career to tie his personal best.
Smith could not be stopped on the glass by doubling his career high of nine rebounds, which he accomplished twice. His play helped the Pride own an alarming 77-36 rebounding edge and his seven offensive boards aided his squad's 35-13 bulge.
Smith also tied career highs with eight assists and six steals. He was named to the all-tournament team with 10 points, 26 rebounds and 12 assists over two games.
Junior Perry Wright (Severn, MD) scored 12 points, freshman Nick Moore (Erial, NJ) had 11 and nine rebounds with sophomore Adam Ahern (West Grove, PA) grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds for Widener (7-5).
Montez Lacy poured in 21 points and Allen Richardson added 14 for the Knights (8-8), who shot only 35 percent (26-of-74) from the field and 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Widener on Saturday returns to Commonwealth Conference play against Lycoming. Tipoff in Williamsport, PA is 3:00 pm.
