Softball Tops Elizabethtown Before Being Eliminated at Conference Tournament

(vs. Elizabethtown) / (vs. Leb. Val.)

Widener posted a 3-2 victory against Elizabethtown in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament before seeing its season end with an 8-0 loss to No. 23 Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA.

Against Elizabethtown, Widener opened the scoring in the first inning.  Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) walked, took second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single to right center by fellow senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ).

The margin ballooned to 3-0 in the fourth.  Junior Kelly Vogelgesang (Upper Darby, PA) drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk and, after Julie Sebastian relieved Emily Vogel in the circle, freshman Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) followed with an RBI single to second base.

The Blue Jays in the top of the seventh loaded the bases with none out and scored twice on an error as well as an RBI fielder's choice from Lindsey Cooper.  But junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) settled down to get both Paige Tanner and Sarah Church to pop out to freshman Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) at second.

Shultz (10-7) notched her third straight win, yielding two runs and nine hits over seven innings with just one walk.  Dougherty and senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) had two hits apiece.

Vogel (8-7) was tagged for three runs and six hits over 3 1/3 innings with three walks and one strikeout for the Blue Jays (18-13-1).  Sebastian and Courtney Comstock each closed with two hits.

Versus Lebanon Valley, the host school jumped to a 7-0 lead after three innings.  Katie Freeman blasted a two-run homer in the first and Steffani Secola cracked a three-run shot during the five-run fifth inning.

Val Malizzia (16-4) held the Pride to just two hits over five scoreless innings with a strikeout and no walks.  Freeman went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Secola drove home four runs for the Dutchmen (31-10).

Dougherty (10-7) gave her best, but allowed eight runs – seven earned – and nine hits over four innings.  Callahan had a hit in each game and ends her career on a 10-game hitting streak.

Widener (27-18) was appearing in the conference tournament a third straight year.
