Widener played its heart out against Elizabethtown on Senior Day, only to be handed a 10-8 Middle Atlantic Conference loss at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Widener grabbed a 5-4 lead with 6:20 left in the first half after sophomore Nick Fluharty (West Grove, PA) and junior Shawn DeHaven (Lyndell, PA) scored consecutive goals 2 1/2 minutes apart.
But the Blue Jays took control with five straight markers for a 9-5 cushion with 21 seconds to play in the third quarter. Aaron Weber scored the last goal in that run after assisting on the first three.
Andrew Janusz (Easton, PA) scored twice and fellow junior JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) dished two assists for Widener, which ended with a 34-29 shots edge that included 20-14 in the first half. Fluharty won 12-of-19 face-offs and freshman Bobby Schulter (Kennett Square, PA) made nine saves.
Weber and Sean Corcoran scored twice each and Brendan Corcoran amassed 10 saves for the Blue Jays.
Widener (7-9, 6-5 MAC), which has played in the last five MAC finals with four championships, already had clinched the number six seed for the conference tournament. It will play third-seeded Lycoming next Monday at a time to be determined.
Elizabethtown (12-3, 10-1) clinched the number one seed and will host a semifinal on Wednesday.
