Widener gave a standout effort and battled to the end against No. 4 Salisbury, only to be dealt a 9-7 loss at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
The Pride just found themselves in a 5-4 deficit at halftime, getting a huge tally from freshman Mike Vandegrift (Jenkintown, PA) with two seconds left. Senior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) scored twice in the half for the home team.
The Seagulls (3-0) established some momentum early in the third quarter, getting goals from Tim Lum and Matt Cannone for a 7-4 margin. Sophomore Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) scored with 2:22 remaining in the period for a two-goal margin.
Salisbury took over with tallies in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter from Sam Bradman and Eric Law for a 9-5 cushion.
Malampy netted four goals, Andrew Janusz (Easton, PA) had a goal and two assists with fellow junior Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) dishing three assists for Widener (0-2). Senior Dave Simcox (Ridley, PA) amassed nine ground balls and junior Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) notched 15 saves.
Bradman had three goals and an assist with Jake DeLillo scoring twice for the Seagulls.
Widener is home next Saturday against Swarthmore as part of the “320 Challenge,” beginning at 1:00 pm.
