Widener hung tough early with second-ranked Stevenson, but in the end was dealt a 15-3 season-opening loss in St. Davids, PA.
Sophomore Nate Meyer (Jenkintown, PA) tallied five minutes in for the Pride to open the scoring. But the Mustangs scored the next 12 goals bridging the first through third quarters with Jimmy Dailey netting three.
Dailey ended with four goals, Richie Ford had two to go with three assists and Ray Witte won 14-of-19 face-offs for the Mustangs (1-0), who recorded a 39-24 shots edge. Geoff Hebert made nine saves.
Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) and fellow junior Steve Cull (Havertown, PA) also scored for Widener (0-1) with senior Dave Simcox (Ridley, PA) notching six ground balls. Junior Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) closed with 10 saves.
The contest was played on the campus of Eastern University.
Widener on Saturday hosts No. 4 Salisbury. Please note the start time has been moved to noon as part of a doubleheader with the women's team, which will host Immaculata beginning at 3:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
