Women's Swimming Defeats Swarthmore and Men Fall

Widener's women's swimming team won its second straight meet, defeating Swarthmore 116-87 and the men suffered a 115-90 loss as part of the "320 Challenge" in Swarthmore, PA.

Freshman Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) won three races for the second meet in a row, and sophomore Kelsey Lake (Ijamsville, MD) also notched three wins for the Pride (2-1).  Harris took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.43 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.91 and helped the 400-yard medley relay team win.  She has now captured six victories in five different events over the last two meets.  Lake grabbed the 50-yard freestyle in 25.91 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 54.99.

The pair also helped the 400-yard medley relay team win in 4:11.64.  The team also included freshmen Laura Farrar (Longmont, CO) and Carli Rapp (Reading, PA).

Farrar won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.97, and fellow freshman Colleen Tighe (Linwood, NJ) recorded two victories, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.57 and the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:16.04.

Senior Jesse Bregman (Oreland, PA) won twice for the men (1-2), stopping the clock in 48.94 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, and helping the 400-yard freestyle relay team win in 3:19.83.  The team also included sophomore Nick Girken (Baltimore, MD) and freshmen Joseph Matarazzo (Drexel Hill, PA) and Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA.

Sophomore Michael Roth (Columbia, MD) captured the 200-yard backstroke in 2:02.92 and junior Charlie Schindler (Pasadena, MD) took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.05.

The loss snaps a 15-meet winning streak over Division III opponents.

The "320 Challenge" is now tied at 3-3.

Widener on Saturday hosts Albright in its first Middle Atlantic Conference meet of the season, beginning at 1:00 pm.
