Widener split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Lycoming, dropping a 2-1 contest in the opener before notching a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Lycoming (5-9, 1-3 CC) in game one scored its runs in the first inning. Manda Peck had a lead-off single and Shauna Starr two batters later cracked a two-run homer.
The Pride (9-7, 3-1) got one back in the second. Junior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) walked and senior Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) lined an RBI single for a 2-1 game.
The Pride wasted another great outing from Belle Mead, NJ junior Kim Dougherty (3-4), who after the home run retired 20 of the last 21 batters but still had her three-game winning streak snapped. She had a career-high nine strikeouts, allowing two runs and three hits over seven innings.
Jessica Nabholz (2-3) permitted one run and five hits over seven innings for the Warriors.
The Pride in game two plated a pair in the first inning, courtesy of senior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA) rapping a two-run single up the middle. Phillips in the fourth executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score sophomore Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) and Connolly went deep in the fifth for her third long ball of the year.
Shultz (5-2) made it stand with her fourth straight win and second consecutive shutout, yielding one walk and two hits with three strikeouts. She has not permitted a run in her last 19 1/3 innings for Widener, which has won eight of its last 10 games.
Starr (2-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs and six hits over six innings with three strikeouts.
Widener on Tuesday hosts Swarthmore at 5:00 pm. Please note on Wednesday the Pride make up their doubleheader at Haverford, starting at 3:30 pm.
