Softball Splits Twin-Bill With Lycoming

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Lycoming, dropping a 2-1 contest in the opener before notching a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

Lycoming (5-9, 1-3 CC) in game one scored its runs in the first inning. Manda Peck had a lead-off single and Shauna Starr two batters later cracked a two-run homer.

The Pride (9-7, 3-1) got one back in the second. Junior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) walked and senior Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) lined an RBI single for a 2-1 game.

Widener in the seventh loaded the bases with two outs as junior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) doubled, and sophomore Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) and junior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) walked. But senior Krista Cesarine (Ridley, Park, PA) struck out to end it.

The Pride wasted another great outing from Belle Mead, NJ junior Kim Dougherty (3-4), who after the home run retired 20 of the last 21 batters but still had her three-game winning streak snapped. She had a career-high nine strikeouts, allowing two runs and three hits over seven innings.

Jessica Nabholz (2-3) permitted one run and five hits over seven innings for the Warriors.

The Pride in game two plated a pair in the first inning, courtesy of senior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA) rapping a two-run single up the middle. Phillips in the fourth executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score sophomore Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) and Connolly went deep in the fifth for her third long ball of the year.

Shultz (5-2) made it stand with her fourth straight win and second consecutive shutout, yielding one walk and two hits with three strikeouts. She has not permitted a run in her last 19 1/3 innings for Widener, which has won eight of its last 10 games.

Starr (2-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs and six hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Widener on Tuesday hosts Swarthmore at 5:00 pm. Please note on Wednesday the Pride make up their doubleheader at Haverford, starting at 3:30 pm.
