Senior Justin Upp (Camden, DE) and freshman Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) each scored twice for Widener, which notched its first victory of the season with a 7-5 Middle Atlantic Conference triumph at Elizabethtown.
Upp scored with 2:34 left in the first quarter to bring Widener to a 2-2 tie and tallied with 51 seconds to play for a 3-2 margin.
Those were the first of five straight goals for Widener that carried into the third quarter. Casey and sophomore JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) found the back of the next in the second quarter and sophomore Kevin McLemore (Upper Darby, PA) scored 26 seconds into the third for a 6-2 game.
Elizabethtown closed to 6-5 with 7:41 remaining, but Casey scored with 2:22 left for the final.
Hoeffler dished two assists, junior Dave Simcox (Ridley, PA) scooped six ground balls and sophomore Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) made nine saves for Widener (1-4, 1-0 MAC).
Keith Staulters scored three times and Hunter Malick made 10 saves for the Blue Jays (2-1, 0-1).
Widener on Wednesday plays its home opener against Wesley, beginning at 7:00 pm.
