Widener nearly overcame a huge first-half deficit as its comeback came up empty in a 63-57 loss to Wesley in Dover, DE.
The Pride (6-6), one night after building a 12-point halftime lead against No. 7 Kean, were in a 31-17 hole at intermission on this day. Angie Owens had 10 points and 11 rebounds in the opening stanza for the Wolverines (4-6), who shot 48 percent (10-of-21) from the floor and limited the visitors to just 19 percent (7-of-37).
Widener mounted its charge by netting eight straight points to close to 33-31 with 14:27 remaining. Senior Rayne Reber (Pottstown, PA) hit a 3-pointer in the burst and freshman Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) ended it with a layup.
After going on an 11-0 run earlier in the half, Wesley scored eight straight points to open a 52-42 lead with 3:51 to play. Owens finished the spurt with a layup.
Reber ended with a season-high 14 points, Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had 10 points and nine rebounds with fellow senior Lindsey Isler (New Hope, PA) adding nine points for Widener, which shot 32 percent (23-of-73) from the field.
Tyler was named to the all-tournament team after closing with 21 points and 18 rebounds over two games.
Owens finished with 21 points and 18 rebounds, Shavonda Cephas scored 11 points and Jasmine Barksdale added 10 for the Wolverines, who won despite hitting just 40 percent (17-of-43) from the field and 59 percent (23-for-39) from the line.
