Despite freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) notching her first double-double and her teammates giving their all, Widener was dealt a 68-59 loss by No. 7 Kean at the Wesley Holiday Tournament in Dover, DE.
The Cougars' nine-game winning streak was of little importance to the Pride (6-5), who scored the final 16 points of the first half over 5 1/2 minutes for a stunning 41-29 lead. Junior Alex Held (Westminster, MD) and freshman Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) netted five points apiece in that span.
Carney ended the first half with 12 points, including two 3-pointers.
Kean (10-1) waited until the second half before finding its touch, using an 18-3 run for a 62-54 lead with 6:48 remaining. Melissa Beyruti scored eight points in the burst that opened with her hitting two 3-pointers.
Senior Lindsey Isler (New Hope, PA) drilled 1-of-2 from the line with 2:26 remaining as Widener closed to 62-59. But Tiffany Patrick made a layup on Kean's next possession for a five-point game to foil the upset bid.
Carney matched her season high with 19 points and hauled in a season-best 10 rebounds. Senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had 11 points and nine rebounds with sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) adding nine and nine for Pride.
Naimah Clemons poured in 16 points with Patrick contributing 11 and nine for the Cougars.
Widener on Tuesday plays Wesley in the consolation game at 2:00 pm.
