Career days from sophomore Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) and junior Chris McDevitt (Doylestown, PA) helped Widener eradicate a 15-point deficit in an 85-74 triumph over Neumann at Schwartz Center.
Brennan had personal bests of 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 14 rebounds for his first career double-double. McDevitt poured in a game-best 21 points to go with five 3-pointers, both career highs.
Widener (4-1), which trailed 25-10 midway through the first half, fought back to tie late in the period. But Neumann (1-1) went on a 10-2 run early in the second half, thanks to four points from Marquise Boggs, for a 48-40 lead with 15:42 left.
The Pride chipped away and took over, using a 15-4 spurt over four minutes for a 63-56 lead with 7:31 remaining. Justin Grotevant (Canadensis, PA), who matched his career high with eight points, netted six in that span.
The margin ballooned to 12 for Widener, which shot an eye-popping 66 percent (19-of-29) from the floor in the second half to outscore Neumann, 51-38. The Knights hit 42 percent (14-of-33) in that span, but were only 31 percent (5-of-16) from 3-point range.
Sophomore Aaquil Atkins (Alexandria, VA) netted 11 points and junior Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD) hauled in eight rebounds for the Pride.
Boggs scored 19 points, Na'Sheed Linton had 14 and 11 assists with Sean Armstrong netting 13 points for the Knights.
Widener on Wednesday opens Commonwealth Conference play at home against Arcadia as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The men's game starts at 8:00 pm, preceded by the women's contest at 6:00 pm.
