Widener played well in taking a three-point lead into the locker room at halftime, but could not hold on in a 59-54 loss to Roanoke at the Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament in St. Mary's City, MD.
Freshmen Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) and Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) led the Pride (2-1) with 12 points each, going a combined 13-of-15 from the free throw line. The two finished with five rebounds apiece and Carney also recorded three steals.
Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards in just 18 minutes. Freshman Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) added seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
Widener led by as many as six points with just under five minutes to go in the first half and owned a 22-19 halftime lead. But the squad could not hold off a tough Roanoke squad which received votes in the D3Hoops.com Preseason Poll.
Jordan Gholson and Caitlyn Long led the Maroons (2-0) with 12 points each. Roanoke finished with four starters in double figures.
Widener plays its second of two games in the tournament Sunday at 2:00 pm against host St. Mary's (MD).
