Senior Devan Green (Monroe Center, IL) and freshman Angela DiMaria (Warrington, PA) had 12 kills apiece for Widener, which ran away in the fourth set for a 3-1 victory (25-14, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17) over Swarthmore in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals at Schwartz Center.
The third-seeded Pride (22-15) advance to the semifinals Saturday against No. 2 seed Gallaudet (25-14) in Center Valley, PA at 1:30 pm. The other semifinal pits No. 1 seed and host DeSales (22-8) against fifth-seeded Saint Vincent (23-10) at 11:00 am.
The final Saturday is at 4:00 pm.
The Pride made quick work of the Garnet (19-11) in the first set with 14 kills and no errors for a .519 hitting percentage. Swarthmore bounced back with 14 kills and a .353 percentage in the second set.
Widener only committed three errors in the third set to take the lead. The home team closed the fourth set with nine kills and forced Swarthmore into eight errors with a -.038 percentage.
Green had an impressive .435 percentage and DiMaria posted a .314 mark for Widener, which also notched a 3-1 victory over Swarthmore on September 19 in the “320 Challenge.” This effort tonight helped the Pride end with 49 kills and a .252 percentage.
Freshman Meghan Spence (Havertown, PA) had 20 digs with junior Erin Gravelle (Media, PA) and freshman Chelsea Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) adding 10 apiece. Sophomore Jamie Ballew (Media, PA) closed with 39 assists.
Genny Pezzola had 16 kills and 15 digs with Allison Coleman adding 23 assists and 10 digs for the Garnet. Kearney Bangs also had a double-double with 14 assists to go with 13 digs and Kathryn Montemurro pounded 13 kills.
Widener is making its second postseason appearance in school history after advancing to the semifinals of last year's ECAC South Tournament. The Pride upended City College of New York at home in the quarterfinals before falling to Penn State Behrend.
