The cardiac kids that are Widener's women's soccer team proved their mettle again with freshman Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) netting her second straight game-winning goal in her team's 3-2 victory at Wesley in Dover, DE.
Doyle took a pass from senior Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) in the 78th minute and buried her second goal of the season. Her first came Saturday, when Widener rallied from two goals down for a 3-2 overtime triumph at Lycoming.
Samantha Hannibal scored in the fourth minute for the Wolverines, but freshman Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) answered in the 10th minute for the Pride off an assist from senior Sarah Schaffer (Deptford, NJ). It was Balentine's team-leading seventh goal.
Wesley again grabbed the lead at 2-1 and again in was Hannibal in the 25th minute. However, Baer responded in the 59th minute off a feed from senior Casey LeRoy (Washington Twp., NJ) for her sixth tally of the season.
The Pride owned a 12-4 shots edge that included 6-0 in the second half. Widener (10-1-1) again matched the 1995 team for the best start in school history and four of its wins this season have come after it was trailing.
Sydney Kahan stopped six shots for the Wolverines (4-7).
This also marks the 99th career victory as head coach for Brian Sheehan, who owns a 99-51-15 overall mark in nine years. As Widener's coach, the program's winningest leader is 48-20-5 in four seasons.
Widener on Thursday hosts Immaculata at 7:00 pm on “Breast Cancer Awareness Night.” All fans are asked to wear pink.
