(Game 1) / (Game 2)
4/8/08 -- Senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) rapped a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving head coach Fred Dohrmann his 400th career victory as Widener rallied for a 4-3 Commonwealth Conference victory and a doubleheader split against Lebanon Valley.
Widener suffered a 2-0 loss in the opener.
The Pride had just two hits entering the seventh inning of game two and trailed 3-0, but pulled off a miraculous comeback. Sophomore Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) opened the frame by reaching on an error by third baseman Aileen Davies. Sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) struck out, junior Carli Saraullo (Somerdale, NJ) walked and sophomore Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) reached on a fielder's choice that erased junior pinch-runner Trina Menta (Broomall, PA) at third.
Sophomore Elizabeth Kohan (Downingtown, PA) kept the game going with a single up the middle to load the bases. Freshman Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) had everyone on their feet by just missing a grand slam, belting one halfway up the left-field wall that scored Brubaker and Saraullo.
Meyer, the reigning conference player of the week, brought the game to a stirring conclusion with a single up that middle that scored Kohan and Phillips, who avoided a blocked home plate and tag from catcher Caitlin Keller.
Dohrmann put another notch in his impressive resume by moving to 400-360 in 27 seasons with the Pride (18-8, 3-1 CC). The winningest coach in the program's history and the winningest active coach in any sport is just two victories shy of his seventh 20-win season.
Belle Mead, NJ sophomore Kim Dougherty (7-2) got the victory, yielding three runs – one earned – and six hits over seven innings with two strikeouts.
Valerie Malizzia (6-2) suffered a tough loss, permitting four unearned runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings with four strikeouts for the Dutchmen (15-7, 3-1).
LVC in game one got an RBI single from Linley Eberhart in the fourth and a long home run in the sixth from Kristen Uhas.
That was plenty for Laura Snyder (6-1), who was masterful with eight strikeouts over seven innings. She yielded only one hit and one walk.
Meyer (8-4) saw her seven-game winning streak snapped, permitting two runs and five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for the Pride.
Widener on Wednesday visits Wesley, beginning at 3:00 pm.
