Widener's men's swimming team notched a thrilling victory in the last race to record a 108-97 win at Swarthmore and the women were dealt a 101-88 setback.
It all came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay and Widener (1-1) grabbed it in 3:19.67. The squad consisted of sophomore Jesse Bregman (Oreland, PA), Jordan Mulligan (Dingmans Ferry, PA), fellow freshman Joe Deighan (Wyomissing, PA) and freshman Tom Coyne (Haddonfield, NJ).
It was the end to a solid night for Bregman, who captured the 100-yard freestyle in 49.10 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.15. Mulligan took the 50-yard freestyle in 22.53 seconds, junior Matt Rhoads (Glenolden, PA) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.44 and senior Shawn McDevitt (Drexel Hill, PA) captured the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.42.
The men's 400-yard medley relay team also was victorious in 3:45.40. The squad was comprised of McDevitt, Rhoads, freshman Sean Corcoran (Newtown, PA) and sophomore Justin Gorbey (Secane, PA).
Junior Tyla Conicello (West Conshohocken, PA) won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.01 seconds, junior Elin Berlin (Wayne, PA) took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:39.48 and freshman Stephanie Mielach (Toms River, NJ) captured the 500-yard freestyle in 5:40.04.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team won in 3:59.84 and was made up of Conicello, Mielach, sophomore Molly Bendzyn (Cherry Hill, NJ) and freshman Carlee Moir (Broomall, PA).
Widener is home Saturday against Albright, beginning at 1:00 pm.
