Women's Soccer Falls, 3-2, to Catholic in ECAC South Quarterfinals

(boxscore)

11/7/07 -- Widener made a valiant comeback in the second half, but came up short in a 3-2 loss to Catholic in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Fifth-seeded Catholic (11-3-4) scored three minutes into the match when Suzie Peters had a cross from the right side to Kelly Andersen, who booted it home for her third goal of the season. This came during a first half in which the Cardinals overcame being outshot, 8-3.

Kelly Donnelly began the wild second half when she scored on a 30-yard shot in the 60th minute for a 2-0 margin. The goal off Peters' second assist was Donnelly's ninth of the year.

Widener (14-6-1), the No. 4 seed, got on the board in the 69th minute. Senior Melanie Miller (Ardsley, PA) blasted a shot that was saved by backup goalkeeper Amanda Cowan, but sophomore Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA) tapped in the rebound for her 16th goal of the year.

Peters continued her solid performance in the 74th minute, taking a feed from Katelynn Chambers and putting in a 15-yard shot for her 12th goal of the year and a 3-1 margin.

Senior Sam Hand (Millville, NJ) scored her eight goal of the season in the 78th minute off Baer's cross, but Widener could get no closer in its fourth postseason appearance in school history (1995, 2002, 2006).

Catholic starting goalkeeper Tere Rossi played 49 minutes before leaving due to injury. Cowan came in and played 28 minutes before getting hurt, leaving forward Sara Cooke to finish the final 13 minutes.

Peters had three shots as part of her four-point game.

Hand took six shots and sophomore goalkeeper Alee Gunter (Maple Shade, NJ) made one save for the Pride.

Widener came up short in its attempt to tie the school record for most victories, set in 1995.

Catholic advances to the semifinals at top-seeded Grove City on Saturday.
