CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Men's Lacrosse end a late game under the lights against Hood with a final shot as time expired that comes one point shy.
The 10-9 loss moves the Pride to 3-11 and 1-4 in conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Nicholas Knepp scored three with two assists on 10 shots.
- Liam Reilly would force two turnovers.
- Colyn Schmitz registered nine saves.
- The Pride held 46 shots to the Blazers 24, went 16-of-21 in clears, and won six faceoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride offense opened the game with pressure on the Blazers defense with shots from Luke Shimko, Liam Drake, and Samuel Haverstrom. The Blazers defense stood the test and would score the first goal at 8:31. Schmitz would make a save and the Blazers would turn the ball over to give Matthew Marino the Pride's first goal with 4:06 left. A Matthew Shingle faceoff win gave Eli Warfel a scoop and score goal to tie the game seconds later. The score after one was 3-2 Hood.
- Schmitz continued to keep the Pride in with saves to open the second. A man-up goal from Shimko moved the score to 4-3. Shimko would tie the game at four after a Haverstrom dish at 5:05. With 3:54 left, Knepp gave the Pride their first lead of the game for an unassisted goal. The score at half was tied at five.
- Hood struck first to open the third before Schmitz saw back-to-back saves. A clock violation for the Blazers gave the Pride a good transition and another Knepp unassisted goal with 7:44 left. The defensive pressure was on for both sides as the Blazers ended the third up 7-6.
- A huge Knepp unassisted goal with 12:11 left would tie the game at seven as Shingle won the next faceoff on a violation. Marino forced a turnover with 7:10 to give the Blazers a failed clear and Haverstrom an unassisted goal to answer two Blazers goals. A thriller final two minutes of play showed Haverstrom scoring a man-up goal to bring the game within one. Schmitz registered his final save before Shimko let the final shot fly as the clock expired to show the score 10-9 favoring Hood.
