Women's Basketball Takes Their First Loss of the Month to Conference Leader Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Women's Basketball keeps it close with the #1 team in the MAC in Messiah but ultimately would fall on the road. 

The Pride fall to 14-8 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Mia Robbins led Widener with a standout performance, scoring a team-high 17 points while shooting an efficient 8-for-13 from the field. She also contributed 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in 23 minutes of action. 

  • Giada Palmieri provided a spark off the bench, tallying 9 points in just 7 minutes of play, going 3-for-5 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. 

  • Lindsay Kutz was a key contributor with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists while playing 33 minutes as a starter. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Widener started strong, keeping pace with Messiah early. Mia Robbins set the tone with an early layup, and Mary McFillin knocked down a three-pointer to give Widener an early boost. The teams exchanged leads throughout the quarter, with Widener trailing 21-15 after the first 10 minutes.  

  • Widener battled back in the second quarter, using a 12-point bench contribution to stay within striking distance. Giada Palmieri provided an offensive spark off the bench, scoring 9 points in just 7 minutes. Lindsay Kutz added a key jumper, and Kimberly Casiello facilitated the offense with 3 assists. However, Messiah capitalized on turnovers and converted 10 free throws in the quarter, keeping Widener down 42-32 at halftime. 

  • Widener came out strong in the second half, going on an early run fueled by Mia Robbins, who dominated inside with multiple layups. Lindsay Kutz and Kimberly Casiello connected on key baskets, helping Widener trim the deficit to 48-43 midway through the quarter. However, Messiah responded with a late surge, pushing their lead back to double digits at 54-46 entering the final quarter. 

  • Widener struggled to regain momentum in the final frame, scoring just 10 points in the last 10 minutes. Mia Robbins continued her strong play with another key basket, and Mary McFillin added a jumper, but Messiah's defense tightened. The home team pulled away late, using a 22-point fourth quarter to seal the game, handing Widener a 76-56 loss despite a competitive effort. 

UP NEXT 

The Pride will need to recover quickly as they travel to Reading, Pa to face an Alvernia team in a game that will have heavy playoff seeding implications. Tip off is set for Saturday, Feb 15 at 1pm.
