Football Struggles on the Road in Week 1 Against Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Widener Football beings 2024 campaign in a challenging fashion.
 
The 12-48 loss results in an 0-1 overall record with conference play beginning next weekend.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pride would hold 119 total offensive yards.
  • Leading the Pride was Malachi Holmes with three receptions for 35 yards.
  • Defensively, Nate Brown and Jalen Walker led with seven total tackles with Walker tacking on two tackles for a loss and two sacks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter of play resulted in a 0-0 final score. The Pride would open the season with a short drive with an AJ Celona 46-yard punt. On the defensive side of the ball, Holmes would for a turnover on downs with a pass breakup in the endzone.
  • Opening the second was the first score of the game with a 0-7 Warriors touchdown. The Pride would march down the field to answer with a field goal from Ryan Pattison. A quick no huddle pass from Michael Caloiaro resulted in a 33-yard catch to the Lycoming 20. Pattison would nail a 36-yard field goal to make the score 3-7. The remainder of the quarter would put the Pride on their heels as the half would end with a 31-3 score in favor of Lycoming.
  • Out of halftime, the Pride would hold the Warriors to 10 total points. In the halfway mark of the quarter the Pride defense would force a three and out with tackles from Walker and Anthony Schiller. The third would end in a 41-3 three quarter score.
  • Defensively, the Pride would begin the fourth with a forced safety as Christian Thompson and Walker came up with big tackles. The score was 41-5. Answering the safety was a drive by the offense in a five-play string. A Jeff Chaplin pass would give Zack Vanscovich a 19-yard catch and run to set up the Pride on the LYCO30. On third and 10, Holmes snagged a 28-yard ball to give the Pride a first and goal on the two. Bryce Casey punched in the ball as Pattison added the point after to make the score 41-12. The Pride would end the game in a tough 48-12 loss.

Widener remains on the road for week two as they head to St. Davids, Pa. for a noon kickoff against the 0-1 (0-0 MAC) Eastern Eagles.
