Trip to Baltimore Ends in Tough Loss for Men’s Lacrosse Against Emerson

Boxscore BALTIMORE, Md. – A neutral site game at Johns Hopkins for Widener Men's Lacrosse ends in a close battle against Emerson.
 
The 14-9 loss puts the Pride at 1-5 in the regular season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jimmy Knepp earned a hat-trick to lead the Pride on 10 shots.
  • Wesley Sporer saw two goals and the first points of the game.
  • Matthew Shingle grabbed 10 ground balls and went 15-of-27 on faceoffs.
  • Defensively, Keegan Billie made 11 saves.
  • The Pride would see 39 shots on offense and lead the Lions 21-19 in caused turnovers on defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sporer and the Pride strike quick with a Shingle faceoff win. Sporer's shot would be the first for both sides just 30 seconds in. A handful possessions for both sides would be ended with a J. Knepp goal to take a 2-1 lead after a Matt Horgan shot. Sean Alminde extended the lead with another Pride goal out of a timeout. Heading into the second, the Pride held a 3-2 lead.
  • Beginning the second, Shingle saw another faceoff win. Billie made a save to turn into a good Widener clear. J. Knepp would rattle off shots along with Alminde and Luke Pollick. Sporer tied the game for the first Pride goal of the second with 4:51 left. Heading into halftime, the Pride were tied 4-4.
  • Shingle continued his faceoff strength with another win to start the third. 10 seconds later, the Knepp brothers put one in to take the lead as Nicholas Knepp saw his first assist. Again, Pride shots would rattle off as J. Knepp continued to find success with 12:42 left. The score was 6-4. The Pride train was rolling as Caiden Shaffer extended the lead with a goal after a Billie caused turnover and ground ball. The Lions would find a groove as the defense began to tire. The Pride would go into the final quarter down 9-7.
  • N. Knepp began the shooting for the Blue and Gold three minutes into the fourth. Matt Buckley saw his first goal of the game with 11:37 left. Shingles faceoff win allowed Sporer to take a rip wide to send Horgan driving to bring the game within two. The remainder of the game stayed scoreless for the Pride as they would fall 14-9.
