Women’s Basketball Hands Messiah First Conference Loss in Midweek Thriller

The Pride Snapped Messiah's 11-Game Winning Streak and Gave Them Their First MAC Loss

CHESTER, Pa. – In a down-to-the-wire game between the MAC's top two teams, Widener women's basketball defeated the Messiah University Falcons 56-50.

The Pride are 18-4 in the regular season. They are 8-3 in MAC play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jordan D'Ambrosio had 18 points to lead the way. She hit two of three triples and tied Kimberly Casiello with a team-best three assists.
  • Mary McFillin came up big with eight points, five steals, and two triples.
  • Widener had seven steals and three blocks on defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
  • Although Messiah started the scoring, Lindsay Kutz hit Widener's first bucket with a layup. Both teams had early struggles connecting on shots, and they each had turnovers. The Pride took their first lead of the evening on a D'Ambrosio three-pointer at 1:39. That would end up being the last bucket of the quarter. Widener led 8-7 through one.
  • The Pride continued to lead in the beginning stages of the second quarter, despite the Falcons trailing right behind. For two straight possessions, a Widener layup was almost immediately countered with one from the visitors. With 3:16 in the half, it was 22-13 Widener after a Kutz layup. However, the Falcons scored nine unanswered points as the score was knotted at 22 going into the locker room.
  • In the second half, the Pride made up for the 9-0 run by Messiah by going on a 7-0 push. D'Ambrosio converted her second three-pointer to end the stretch. The Falcons continued to dig into their deficit, but the Pride held their ground with timely shots. Even with the score within three points in the waning minute of the quarter, D'Ambrosio hit a layup with three seconds remaining to put Widener up 41-36.
  • Gianna Samuels hit the first shot of the fourth quarter. Messiah not only was not able to stop Widener's attack, but their shots were not falling either. The visitors made things interesting in the last 30 seconds by hitting back-to-back shots after they called two separate timeouts. Reese Harden of Messiah fouled out with 21 seconds to go, and the Falcons would not recover. Widener won a hard-fought battle 56-50.
