Women’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series over Alvernia on Senior Day

The Pride Honored Their Three Seniors

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's basketball took down the Alvernia University Golden Wolves 67-45 on Saturday. The Pride celebrated seniors Mary Tolentino, Gianna Samuels, and Jordan D'Ambrosio.

The Pride are 19-4 in the regular season. They are 9-3 in MAC play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mia Robbins had a team-high 22 points. She was the only Widener player with double-digit points.
  • Lindsay Kutz had an all-around good game, recording six points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
  • Mary McFillin hit two of the Pride's five triples.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA
  • Robbins hit the first shot of the day on a layup. The Pride exploded for an 11-0 start overall. The Golden Wolves could not hit shots to open the game, and they turned the ball over a few times. Alvernia got their first make at 2:48, but it would be one of just two shots allowed by Widener. The Pride led 13-4 after one.
  • The Pride started the second quarter on a 7-0 push, capped off by a Kaitlyn Kearney three-pointer. The visitors could not make up any ground in this quarter, going down by as much as 20. Despite making buckets from the Golden Wolves toward the end of the quarter, Robbins made a free throw with 22 seconds left. Widener had a 33-21 lead at the half.
  • In the first minutes of the third quarter, the home team had another 7-0 run. However, it was part of a much larger 18-3 outburst. Robbins continued to take advantage of the smaller defenders in the post, while players like McFillin and D'Ambrosio kept the Golden Wolves guessing. Both sides exchanged shots to end the third quarter, with the Pride holding a 55-29 lead.
  • Robbins and Alvernia's Morgan Janeski each had a bucket within 30 seconds of one another to start the fourth. The Pride hovered around a 25-point lead for the majority of the last 10 minutes. By the time the clock was at five minutes left, the Pride gave time to the bench players. Rachel Ludwig, Aubrey Curley, Giada Palmieri, Kaitlin Meenan, Mia Elisano, and Lauren Sanderson all got playing time in the waning minutes. Palmieri ended the game on a free throw. Widener won 67-45.
