CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's basketball earned a big win on Wednesday, as they beat the York College Spartans 71-61.
The Pride are 14-4 in the regular season. They are 4-3 in MAC play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jordan D'Ambrosio led the team with 19 points. She was 11-15 from the charity stripe.
- Widener had nine fast break points.
- The Pride had nine steals and six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
- Immediately after the opening tip, York and Widener exchanged triples. The latter was by Mary McFillin. The scoring from both sides was even early on, as both teams committed turnovers. A 6-0 run by the visitors made the score 16-9. Widener would chip away with a few layups to end the quarter, but the Spartans led 19-13.
- In the second quarter, the Pride would cut the deficit to three on a D'Ambrosio jumper and a McFillin fastbreak three. It was part of a 9-2 Widener run. The Pride would take the lead near the two-minute mark on a Robbins' layup. York would add another layup to end the half. Widener had a slim 29-28 advantage going into the locker room.
- The Spartans started the second half with a 5-0 push capped off by a triple. Both sides took turns taking the lead, and the Pride used a 12-3 outburst to go up 41-36. The scoring would cease for about four minutes toward the end of the quarter, but Widener kept their lead on a final layup. Widener led 48-41 through three.
- Lindsay Kutz hit the Pride's first shot of the quarter on a layup. Despite D'Ambrosio then getting back to the free throw line, the Spartans cut into their deficit on a triple. Gianna Samuels would answer with her own three, though. Each attempt at a comeback by York was countered by Widener each time. McFillin would put the game away on a three-pointer with 53 seconds left. The final score was Widener 71-61.
