MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Widener women's basketball took a tough loss against the Messiah University Falcons on Wednesday, falling 75-64.
The Pride are 13-3 in the regular season. They are 3-2 in MAC play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mia Robbins led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds.
- The Pride had 12 steals compared to the Falcons' 10.
- Out of 35 Widener rebounds, 15 were on the offensive side.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
- Messiah scored nine straight points to open the game before Robbins connected on a jumper. The Falcons continued to build their lead via triples, making the Pride deficit 10 at 4:42. Despite two more Widener buckets, one each from Jordan D'Ambrosio and Robbins, Messiah did not let up. After one quarter, the Falcons led 24-9.
- D'Ambrosio made a jumper as the second quarter began. With back-to-back shots from Widener, the Pride trimmed the Messiah lead to 11 before the latter hit a triple. Later in the quarter, Gianna Samuels would convert the Pride's lone three-pointer to make the score 35-20. The home team ended the half on a 9-2 run. The score was 44-22 Messiah at halftime.
- Widener started the second half with a 4-0 push. Lindsay Kutz hit two free throws before D'Ambrosio hit a jumper. Despite the two teams trading buckets, the Falcons kept their lead to over 20 points. With under four minutes in the quarter, Avalynn Baer went on a 7-0 run by herself. Five of those points came on foul shots. A D'Ambrosio layup was the final shot of the quarter. Through three, the Falcons were up 59-39.
- A 4-0 run by Messiah was interrupted by a Robbins' layup. The Pride had the most success in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points. With seven-and-a-half minutes left in the game, the Pride made one last attempt at a comeback. They went on a 12-2 run, which was capped off with another Robbins' layup. Even with this, however, the Falcons kept making shots, and the lead stayed in double digits. D'Ambrosio ended the game with a final jumper, but the Falcons won 75-64.
