CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's basketball put up a good fight on Wednesday against the Eastern University Eagles, but the Pride fell 64-57.
The Pride are 12-2 in the regular season. They are 2-1 in MAC play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jordan D'Ambrosio led the team with 23 points.
- Widener outshot Eastern in free throws. The Pride were 7-13 (53.8%). The Eagles were 9-17 (52.9%).
- Out of the Pride's nine steals, Lia Samuels had four.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
- After an Eastern bucket, Gianna Samuels started Widener's scoring with a triple. Despite the Pride keeping up with the Eagles throughout the quarter, the Eagles ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run. The final Widener shot was a jumper by D'Ambrosio at 3:35. At the end of the first quarter, the score was Eastern 14-7.
- Two D'Ambrosio shots opened the second quarter. The Eagles answered with a 9-0 run, which included a three-pointer. Avalynn Baer and Kimberly Casiello helped chip into the team's deficit, but the Eagles still kept the home team at a distance. Baer scored a jumper as the clock was winding down to the final seconds. Eastern led 26-20 going into the locker room.
- Out of the half, the visitors went on an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 17. Some missed Widener shots and turnovers led to the Eagles taking advantage. Eight straight points for the Pride brought Eastern lead to nine. The two sides traded points for the remainder of the quarter, but Eastern was still in the lead. Through three, the Eagles were up 49-41.
- Eastern and Widener exchanged layups to open the final quarter. Lindsay Kutz made the first Widener bucket. Two Eastern triples in about two-and-a-half minutes put them back into a double-digit lead. A 9-0 Widener run, capped off by a D'Ambrosio and-one, brought the Pride back to a two-point deficit. But, the Eagles continued to get to the foul line. Widener would not get the lead, and the final score was 64-57 Eastern.
