HOW IT HAPPENED AT OWINGS MILLS GYMNASIUM
The Pride jumped out to a quick 5-0 start, as a
Pat Holden jumper and a Dunn triple initiated the offense. Dunn was also able to tie the score at 7-7 after the Mustangs had a 7-0 run of their own. Through the first 10 minutes of action, neither side was able to definitively take a lead. The Pride were having a tough time stopping Stevenson's Connor Walsh, who had 11 early points. Matlack hit back-to-back buckets, a layup and a three, toward the midway point of the first half.
Kenny Lewis converted a layup a few moments later. A Matlack triple with under nine minutes in the half made the score 26-22 Widener. Once the Pride had the score at 32-25 after a
Kevin Schenk layup, the Mustangs were forced to call timeout. The Pride's final points came from a Schenk foul shot. Both teams went to the locker room with the score tied at 38. As a team, the Pride collected seven offensive rebounds and hit 4-10 (40%) of their threes.
After the Mustangs made the first two baskets for either team coming out of the break, Dunn was fouled and hit both of his free throws. Dunn was a perfect 11-11 in the game from the charity stripe. After that, Widener's offense turned cold for a few minutes. With 16:54 left, they finally snapped the cold streak on a Holden triple. The Pride's deficit was now 46-43. Widener found more momentum from Schenk, who scored four straight points. With 12 minutes to go, Dunn made a hook shot to make the score 55-52 Widener. The Mustangs gave up the lead when they were up 60-59, and they never regained it for the rest of the night. Once there was about two minutes left in the game, both sides used the free-throw battle at the end. But, Widener was well in control of the score. The final score was 81-74. In the final 20 minutes, the Pride outscored their opponent 43-36, hit 20 of their 24 total made free throws for the evening, and held the lead for about 14 minutes.
