Men’s Basketball Defeats Eastern, Takes Second Seed in MAC Commonwealth

Dominic Dunn, Pat Holden Combine for 52 points

CHESTER, Pa. – As the playoffs draw near, the Pride picked up a huge 93-82 win against the Eastern University Eagles. For now, Widener holds the second seed in the MAC Commonwealth behind Alvernia.

The Pride are now 14-7 in the regular season and 8-4 in MAC Commonwealth play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dominic Dunn and Pat Holden led the way offensively. Dunn had 29 points, while Holden chipped in 23.
  • The Pride were on fire from downtown, hitting 16-29 (55.2%) from the three-point line. Dunn was responsible for seven of those makes.
  • Widener won the rebounding battle 35-28.
HOW IT HAPPENED AT SCHWARTZ ATHLETIC CENTER
Dunn was the first player for either side to score, as he hit a jump shot. Widener would get another bucket, this time from Kenny Lewis, before the Eagles could get on the board. Through the early part of the first half, the Pride and Eagles tried to find a rhythm offensively. Down 15-10 with 14:46 left in the half, the Pride cashed in on two straight possessions with a layup from Lewis and a jumper from Holden. Despite the Eagles going up as much as 31-20, Widener stormed back on a 13-0 run. With the score at 35-35 with five minutes to go, the Pride's defense held Eastern to zero points for the rest of the half. Dunn added two triples in that stretch.  The two sides headed to the locker room with the score at 47-35 Widener. In the first half, the Pride hit exactly 50% of their threes and 60% of their foul shots. For Eastern, those numbers were 40% and 60%, respectively.

The Pride's first points of the second half were from a Steven Matlack three. The score was 50-37 Widener. With the Eagles looking to get the game to single digits, a Holden three with 16 minutes remaining kept Eastern's deficit to 10 points. Widener began distancing themselves from their opponent in the middle portion of the half. They led 72-56 after a Dunn triple with 9:13 left. At 3:09 remaining, Eastern's Zubair Lee picked up a technical foul. Holden helped himself to two free throws because of it. Luke Mazur was the last to score for either side, making a layup as the clock ran down. The final score was Widener 93-82. For the game, the Pride dished out 20 assists, with Holden having a team-high six dimes. The Pride also added two blocks and six steals.

UP NEXT
The Pride hit the road to take on the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen on Wednesday. It is a conference matchup, with tip-off being at 6 p.m.
