CHESTER, Pa. – A final relay race became a deciding factor in a challenging non-conference meet against Ursinus in the Schwartz Center.
The 137-125 loss put the Pride at 3-1 in the regular season and leaves the men at 3-0 in conference meets.
The quad of
Matthew Niro,
Dan Jackson, Jason Monigovi, and
Shane Douthit opened the meet with a 1:37.88 win in the 200-yard medley relay to out touch the Bears by 0.4.
A 2-3 in the 200-yard free for Mongiovi and
Jadyn Manning added points to the Pride. Mongiovi would register a 1:49.63 while Manning hit in a 1:52.69.
Another 2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke from
Patrick Rauch and Niro. Rauch would fall just shy of D'Avella from Ursinus in a 56.29. Niro finished just behind in a 56.47.
For the second week in a row, Jackson hit first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 59.73 to win by nearly three seconds.
Mongiovi led a 1-2-3 charge in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:01.67.
Adam Bailey and Josh Cunnningham rounded out the sweep with a 2:07.03 and a 2:10.44 to give the Pride a wealth of points.
Manning would split up a fast Bear's charge in the 50-yard free with a 22.22.
Out of the break, Douthit again split up a Bear's charge to take second in the 100-yard free with a 48.26 to miss first by 0.01. Manning would sneak into fourth with a 50.50.
Niro, Rauch and
Patrick Rankin took an important 2-3-4 in the 200-yard backstroke. Niro led with a 2:04.74, Rauch split a 2:05.81, and Rankin registered a 2:07.51.
Jackson added a second win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:12.56 to win by four seconds. Jackson's 2:12.56 would become his new season best from a 2:13.45.
Michael Machristie took third with a 2:17.77.
Niro took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a 53.04 to win by almost a second while Cunningham took third with a 55.26.
In the final individual event, Mongiovi set the Pride up for a close final race. Mongiovi took first with a 2:00.04 while Machristie and Rankin took 3-4 with a 2:09.91 and a 2:10.49.
In the final must win race, the Pride fell just short with a second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Manning, Cunningham, Jackson, and Douthit clocked a 3:19.13.
