Women’s Basketball Takes Down King’s in Midweek Battle

Mary McFillin Had Two Steals and Four Blocks

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Widener women's basketball defeated the King's College Monarchs on Wednesday 66-59. With the win, the Pride stay undefeated.

The Pride are 7-0 on the season. Their first MAC game is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Hood.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jordan D'Ambrosio led the team with 21 points. She shot 8-11 and made her only three-point attempt.
  • The Pride almost doubled the Monarchs in points in the paint (38-20).
  • Widener had six blocks and six steals on defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST KING'S
  • Neither team was unable to score until three minutes had gone by in the first quarter. But, D'Ambrosio started the scoring for the Pride with a layup. A couple of steals by Mary McFillin gave Widener an early advantage. Even with a four-point lead for the Pride, both sides' shooting went cold for the remainder of the quarter. A three by King's with 37 seconds left cut the deficit to one. Widener led 9-8 after the initial 10 minutes.
  • A quick 4-0 run from the Monarchs was stopped when a Mia Robbins free throw and a D'Ambrosio layup tied the game at 12. King's would continue to push the tempo, scoring six unanswered. McFillin's hot start to the night went on, though. Two threes by her gave Widener a two-point lead. The Pride would score one more bucket for the remainder of the first half, as the Monarchs led 27-24 at the break.
  • Robbins scored the first nine points for Widener to open the second half, including an and-one. Widener blew the game open in the third quarter. After a King's bucket at 6:03, the Pride utilized a 15-0 run to go up 48-32. D'Ambrosio closed out the quarter with two successful free throws. Widener had a 52-37 advantage through three quarters.
  • King's began the final quarter with a triple and two foul shots. Six straight points for Widener would balloon the lead back to 16 before the Monarchs interrupted the run. Even with a Widener lead at the end of the game, the home team was not ready to accept defeat. Two quick fouls from McFillin put the Monarchs at the foul line. Although King's would make more free throws and get a triple with 15 seconds left, the Pride's lead was never truly threatened. The Pride would go on to win 66-59.
