Women’s Basketball Seizes Two More Wins at Hunter Tournament

Both Widener Wins were Blowouts

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Widener women's basketball convincingly defeated the Farmingdale State Rams 69-51 on Saturday. They are now undefeated in two tournaments in as many weeks.

The Pride are 5-0 on the season. Their first MAC game is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Hood.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mary McFillin had a team-high 11 points. Gianna Samuels was just behind with 10.
  • The Pride shot a season-high 43.8% (28-64).
  • Widener's bench outscored Farmingdale State's bench 31-18.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST FARMINGDALE STATE
  • Jordan D'Ambrosio began the game with a steal 10 seconds in. However, the first Widener bucket would come at 7:54, when McFillin hit a three on a D'Ambrosio assist. The Rams would keep the score close for the middle portion of the quarter. The Pride responded with a 10-2 outburst to close out the first 10 minutes. The run was initiated with a Lia Samuels triple, which snapped a two-game streak of a three-point cold spell for her. Farmingdale State kept their deficit in single digits with a free throw within the last 30 seconds. Widener led 20-11 after the first quarter.
  • A Giada Palmieri layup was the opening shot of the second quarter and the start of an 8-0 Pride run. Widener would outscore Farmingdale State 18-6 in the quarter, as they took advantage of eight Rams' turnovers. The Rams would not score until 4:50 left in the quarter. Not too long after, a Kaitlyn Kearney triple put the Pride up 20 points. Farmingdale State's only source of points toward the end of the half was from the foul line. Widener held a 38-17 advantage at the half.
  • Both the Pride and Rams took turns exchanging shots at the beginning of the second half. Despite this, Widener kept their attack steady in order to prevent any Farmingdale State runs. Just under the seven-minute mark, McFillin cashed in her third triple of the game to grow the lead to 25. At that point, she had made a three in every quarter. The final Widener points of the third set of 10 minutes were on two Kimberly Casiello free throws. After three, the score was 53-33 Widener.
  • After a few turnovers by both sides, a Mia Robbins layup got the scoring going in the fourth quarter. For the first two scores by both sides, Widener scored a pair of two-pointers, while Farmingdale State hit two three-pointers. A 10-3 run put Widener up 26 before Farmingdale State's 8-2 run cut into the deficit. Although the Rams scored twice at the end, the Pride took the 69-51 win.
