GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Widener women's basketball opened the new season strong, as they beat the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions 90-61.
The Pride begin the new season 1-0. Their first MAC game is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Hood.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mia Robbins led the way with 23 points on 9-16 shooting, and she collected 10 rebounds for the double-double.
- Fifteen of the Pride's 54 rebounds were on the offensive end.
- The Nittany Lions never had the lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PENN STATE ABINGTON
- The first basket for either side was a Mary McFillin three on a Gianna Samuels assist. The Pride would go up 7-0 before Penn State Abington would score a bucket. Another big Widener run would give them a 17-6 advantage after the first quarter.
- Almost immediately, the Pride hit the first shot of the second quarter on a Lia Samuels triple. Robbins would get a few chances to score, as the Nittany Lions continued to trail. After a Pride timeout that saw Penn State Abington score six straight points, each side traded shots until Widener struck gold at the foul line. They hit all 10 attempts. A layup by Angel Morris of the Nittany Lions at the buzzer made the score 41-24 at the half.
- Robbins began the third quarter with a layup, which was answered by a Penn State Abington jumper. The Pride had an array of scorers to keep their strong lead. Jordan D'Ambrosio hit the first Pride triple of the second half at 6:14 to give Widener a 23-point advantage. The Pride would show their defensive prowess to keep the teams 28 points apart at one point. No one on either side scored in the final minute, and the score stayed at 62-39.
- The Nittany Lions opened the final quarter with four consecutive points. Penn State Abington tried to keep the game competitive, but the Pride did not let up. The lead stayed in the twenties for Widener, and they ended the game on a 5-0 run on free throws. The Pride took the win, 90-61.
