READING, Pa. – Widener women's indoor track and field see their first competition at Alvernia's Winter Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
After a year off from competition, the women's indoor track and field team returned for the season. The Alvernia Winter Invite featured a full slate of events with a handful of MAC teams such as Stevens, Albright, York, and Eastern.
Sophomore
Maria Muzzarelli got things started for the Pride in the 60-meter dash with a prelims time of 7.96 which advanced her into the finals. Teammate
Jayla Gore also ran a personal best with an 8.10 time. Muzzarelli finished fourth with a 7.89 time to put her in the top 10 of Widener's All Time Top 10 list.
The very next event, Muzzarelli was back to compete in the 200-meter dash and placed fourth with a 27.57 which earned her a MAC qualification. Gore also picked up a MAC qualifying time while
Sydni Bell and
Lindsay LaPointe competed in their first races in a Widener uniform.
Sophomore
Emma Schultz led the Pride in the 400-meter dash by placing fifth in a 1:04.51 with first year Emma O'Brien and
Olivia Giannella placing ninth and 11
th respectively.
In the 800-meter run, the Pride swept the race with sophomore
Donna Holt leading the charge with first
Gabby Nye and
Elizabeth Egan following. Shortly after the sweep,
Emily Cooney,
Chris Tran, and
Kathryn Long crossed the finish line to place no farther than 15
th place. Holt, Nye, Egan, and Cooney earned MAC qualification from their race.
A few events later, Nye, Egan, Holt, Cooney, Long, Tran ran the mile with Nye leading the pack with a 5:21.60. Nye finished first with a three, four, five placing from Egan, Holt, and Cooney, each earning another MAC qualification time.
