HOW IT HAPPENED IN CHARLES WOLF GYMNASIUM
Within the first minute of action, Widener and York were each on the board. York forward Bradi Zumbrum, who scored her team's first six points, started with a layup. Widener's
Jordan D'Ambrosio cashed in on a triple. The ladies defense stood up as the Spartans tried to capitalize on a few Widener turnovers. After a long portion of the first quarter, Zumbrum was sent to the foul line which broke the drought as she made both free throws. Widener's Kimberly Cassiello sank the second triple for her team at 2:55 to make the score 8-6. Teammate
Mia Robbins completed a three point play 50 seconds later after being fouled. After a three-pointer from each team, York's Alyssa Hocker converted a layup within the final minute. The first quarter ended with the score at 14-11. The Pride shot 5 of 13 (38.5%) from the floor, 3 of 5 (60%) from the arc, and saw one successful free throw from Robbins.
The Pride looked to overtake the Spartans in the second quarter but struggled to do so, as they scored four points over the 10 minutes. York's Tori Geitner hit three triples in a row to send them on a 10-0 run. Widener's next bucket came at 5:16 from a Robbins' layup.
Mary McFillin recorded the assist. Both teams missed some shots before substitutions were brought in for both sides. A foul by Robbins sent Zumbrum to the free-throw line at 2:57, where both shots were successful. The score was 29-18. This would be the final scoring for anyone until halftime. In the second, the team saw a game low 2 of 18 (15.4%) in field goals and seven missed three opportunities.
As the Pride came out for the second half, they looked to find their groove but challenged to do so. At 8:31, York's Taylor Brenneman converted a layup to push the score to 31-18. Robbins followed with two completed free throws to shorten the gap. Starting at 5:36, the Pride's defense began to ware as the Spartans used an 11-1 run. Kutz finally broke the run with a made foul shot at 1:58 stemming from a Hocker foul. Burda and Kutz exchanged one more score each before the quarter ended with the score at 47-27. As a team, the Pride shot 2 of 11 (18.2%) from the floor, came up empty on three pointers, and sunk 5 of 8 (62.5%) free throws.
Robbins tried to give the Pride some answers by going into the paint and scoring at 9:04. At 5:14, the Pride countered the Spartan third quarter run with a run of their own. McFillin cashed in on a four-point opportunity. She hit a three pointer as Brooklyn Naylor of York fouled her behind the arc. Two Kutz free throws and another McFillin three came after until the Spartans scored again. In total, it was a 9-0 Widener run. However, Geitner scored the final five points for York to seal the deal for the Spartans as they walked away with a 63-49 victory. Over the 60 minutes, the Pride saw 18 points in the paint, 18 points off Spartan turnovers, 12 points off second changes, and 12 from the bench.
