WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Widener University football team began MAC play on Saturday, but could not get in the win column as it fell to Wilkes, 44-20, at Schmidt Stadium.
The loss put the Pride at 1-2 on the season. It also ended Widener's seven-game winning streak against Wilkes.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WILKES
- The Pride played the Colonels tough through the first quarter and a half, as they were tied with them at 7 with 5:08 left in the half. The Pride scored their lone touchdown on an 11-yard run by Shawn Thompson with 14:54 remaining in the second quarter.
- However, the Colonels took the lead on an 88-yard touchdown pass with 4:55 remaining and increased it to 20-7 with 11 seconds left after returning an interception 67 yards for a TD.
- In the third quarter, the Colonels hit another big play, rushing for a 72-yard TD to make it a 27-7 advantage. However, the Pride cut the deficit to 27-14 after Jordan Baxter caught a 9-yard TD pass from Kevin Mowrey with 9:53 remaining. Unfortunately, Wilkes added another TD three minutes later to take a 34-14 lead into the fourth quarter.
- In the fourth quarter, the Colonels added 10 more points while the Pride got one final score as time expired after Cameron Hooper caught a 4-yard TD from Michael Caloiaro.
By The Numbers
- Thompson found the end zone for the third straight game with his 11-yard score. The senior running back now has five rushing touchdowns, which leads the MAC.
- Hooper led the Pride on the receiving end, totaling a career-high 94 yards on three receptions. The sophomore's three catches included a 60-yard reception from Mowrey in the third quarter.
- Colin Murt paced the defense with seven tackles and a half sack.
