Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match with King’s, AIC

Pride walks away with two wins on Senior Day

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's volleyball team broke a five-match losing streak with a pair of wins against King's College and American International College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Athletic Center. 

The Pride swept the Monarchs, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15, in the first match, then topped the Yellow Jackets in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, in the second match.

The Pride are now 7-12 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST KING'S
  • The Pride offense was hot, totaling 43 kills in the match. Declan Quinn and Matthew Christ led the team with 11 kills apiece. Josh Matchett helped the offense by tallying 33 assists.
  • Senior Alex Arnow had five aces and eight digs for the Pride
  • Defensively, Dylan Beer led the Pride with four blocks. Matchett added three blocks.
  • Both the Pride and the Monarchs went back and forth in the first two sets. In the first set, the Pride went on a 6-0 run in the first set to break a 14-all tie and go on to win the game. In the second game, the Pride broke a 20-all tie by winning five of the last six points of the set.
  • Widener's best victory over King's came in the third set where it went on a 16-7 run to end the match.
  • Before the match, Arnow and fellow senior Kevin Martin were honored and recognized for their four years of service to the men's volleyball program.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST AIC
  • In the first set, Widener broke a 12-all tie by going on a 13-5 run to win it.  
  • In the second set, the Pride jumped out to a 15-4 lead and cruised to the victory.
  • In the final set, the Pride snapped a 10-all tie by winning five of the next six points to take a 15-11 lead. The Pride and the Yellow Jackets would trade points until the Pride earned the final two points of the match on an AIC attack error and a Matchett ace.
  • The Pride offense tallied 15 aces on the day. Matchett and Ethan Cox led the team with four aces apiece.
  • Cole Nagle had 10 digs to pace the Widener defense. Dylan Beer and Matchett had three blocks apiece.
UP NEXT
The Pride continues MAC play this week as they face Messiah University on  Wednesday on the road. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
