Men's Volleyball Concludes Season with Four-Set Loss to Misericordia

CHESTER, Pa. - The Pride battled in their home finale, but the Cougars secured a four-set victory to close out Widener's season. 

The Pride drops to 8-19 on the season and 1-7 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Jason Dunn directed the offense with a team-high 30 assists 

  • Marquis and Njokanma led the net presence with four blocks apiece 

  • Kevin Tinio anchored the defense with a team-high eight digs 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Misericordia jumped out to an early 4–2 lead, capitalizing on quick offense and a service ace to set the tone. Widener responded with kills from Marquis and Dahl to even the score at 6–6, and the teams continued to trade points through the middle of the set. The Cougars regained control with a small run to take a 12–8 advantage, but the Pride battled back behind kills from Dahl, Josh Akinwale, and Kevin Stubbs to close the gap. Widener continued to chip away, eventually tying the set at 18–18 and later again at 20–20. Late in the set, Widener gained momentum, taking a 23–21 lead following a service ace from Njokanma and a Cougar error. However, Misericordia answered with a late surge, tying the set at 23–23 before closing it out in extra points, 26–24. 

  • The second set opened with Widener taking an early edge, highlighted by kills from Marquis and Dahl to build a 4–2 lead. Misericordia quickly responded, using a mid-set run to turn the tide and go ahead 11–8. The Pride battled back behind multiple kills from Marquis, trimming the deficit to 15–14. However, the Cougars answered once again, stringing together key points to extend their lead to 21–17. Widener made a late push with a block and an additional kill from Marquis, but Misericordia held off the comeback attempt to secure a 25–22 set win. 

  • The third set saw Widener bounce back with a strong response, opening with a kill from Wannamaker before Misericordia built an early 5–2 lead. The Pride answered with a run of their own, fueled by multiple kills from Randall and Akinwale, to even the score at 6–6. From there, the set remained tightly contested, with neither team able to create separation as the score moved through ties at 11–11, 14–14, and 16–16. Widener began to gain momentum late, using a Cougar error and key kills from Randall and Njokanma to edge ahead 21–20. The teams traded points down the stretch, eventually tying again at 23–23. After facing set point, the Pride held firm with a clutch block from Akinwale and Dahl to even it at 24–24. Widener then capitalized on a Misericordia error before sealing the set with a service ace from Randall to take the third set 26–24. 

  • The fourth set opened evenly, with kills from Wannamaker helping Widener keep pace early as the score sat tied at 3–3. After trading points to 5–5, Misericordia used a key service run, highlighted by back-to-back aces, to create separation and take an 8–5 lead. The Cougars continued to build momentum, extending their advantage to 12–6. Widener looked to respond with kills from Randall and Njokanma, but Misericordia answered each push. Another decisive run, fueled by multiple service aces and efficient attacking, pushed the lead to 20–11 and put the set out of reach. The Pride were unable to recover, as Misericordia closed out the match with a 25–13 fourth-set victory.
