ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- The Widener men's volleyball team battled hard against Easter, but came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Eagles on Wednesday night at Eastern University Gymnasium. Widener lost the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21, won the third set, 25-23, but lost the fourth 26-24.
With the loss, the Pride dropped to 5-12 on the season and 1-9 in MAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
- Matthew Christ had one of his best performances of the season for the Pride, tallying 19 kills, matching his season high. The first-year from Newfoundland, N.J. currently ranks fourth in the MAC in kills per set with 3.4.
- Josh Matchett also had a big night for the Pride, tying his career high in assists with 39 assists. This puts him sixth in the MAC in assists per set with 8.05.
- After dropping the first two sets, the Pride showed great resilience in the third set, walking away with their only win of the night after breaking a 23-all tie by receiving a kill from Christ and scoring the final point on an Eastern attack error.
- In the fourth set, the Pride overcame a 16-11 deficit by going on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 17. Michael Martino paced the Pride during the run with two kills, while Dylan Beer and Declan Quinn added one kill apiece.
- From there, the Pride and the Eagles kept exchanging points until the two teams were tied at 24. However, the Eagles scored the final two points on a service error and a kill to take the match.
- Defensively, Nick Poulson led Widener with five blocks and libero Cole Nagle led the team with nine digs.
UP NEXT
Widener will be back in action on Saturday in a home tri-match against King's College and American International College. The Pride will face King's in a MAC contest at noon, then will take on AIC at 4 p.m.
